Campgrounds in the national parks, monuments and forests along US Route 89 are not the only options. Campgrounds established by the states are a possibility and often not as crowded. Arizona and Utah in particular have many parks that offer modern facilities for both recreational vehicles and tent camping. Here is a quick reference list of parks on or near US Route 89 that have camping facilities.
Arizona
Tucson Mountain Park
On the west side of Tucson, this Pima County Park has a large campground for RVs and tents.
Catalina State Park
Just north of Tucson, Catalina has a large campground with hook-ups for RVs and sites for tent campers.
Lost Dutchman State Park
East of Phoenix near Apache Junction, Lost Dutchman has fabulous views of the Superstition Mountains.
Maricopa County Parks
There are several parks in Maricopa County surrounding Phoenix that offer camping. Check the website for specifics.
Dead Horse Ranch State Park
Located in the town of Cottonwood in the Verde Valley, Dead Horse Ranch offers camping on the banks of the Verde River.
Utah
Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park
Near Kanab in southern Utah, Coral Pink Sand Dunes is a popular campground with the ATV crowd.
Kodachrome Basin State Park
Located just east of Bryce Canyon, Kodachrome Basin is filled with some very unusual geological formations.
Puite State Park
Situated on a reservoir, Puite is popular with fishman and offer primative camping facilities.
Palisade State Park
Located in the Sanpete Valley, the campsites at Palisade surround a small reservoir.
Antelope Island State Park
Located on an island in the Great Salt Lake, this park offers one of the more unusual camping experiences along US 89.
Willard Bay State Park
Willard Bay is on the shore of the Great Salt Lake north of Salt Lake City.
Bear Lake State Park
This park is on the shore of Bear Lake straddling the Utah/Idaho border.
Wyoming
The stretch of US 89 through Wyoming is dominated by Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. I am not aware of any state campgrounds in the area. Check with the Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce for facilities in and around Jackson.
Montana
Sluice Boxes State Park
Sluice Boxes is located south of Great Falls and offers only backcountry camping.
